Dopo la consegna da parte dei cantieri Babcock del complesso del bulbo di prua, la costruzione della futura portaerei della Royal Navy classe Queen Elizabeth procede con il completamento dei test della prima delle due turbine a gas MT30 effettuato da Rolls-Royce, e della costruzione della prima delle due eliche, costruite dalla sussidiaria svedese Kamewa.
L’elica, che misura circa sette metri di diametro e pesa 33 tonnellate, ha completato le prove di accettazione presso lo stabilimento Rolls-Royce idi Kristinehamn, in Svezia. Le due turbine a gas combinate ai 4 generatori diesel spingeranno ciascuna nave fino ad una velocità di 25 nodi con una autonomia compresa tra i 14.800 e i 18.520 km.
Rolls-Royce è parte del team incaricato della costruzione del sistema di propulsione elettrica integrato, costituito dalle eliche, dagli alberi di trasmissione, timoni, cuscinetti assiali e gli impianti elettrici a bassa tensione, che comprende Thales, Converteam e L-3.
Questo team riporta direttamente al consorzio Aircraft Carrier Alliance – ACA (che comprende BAE Systems, Babcock Marine, Thales UK e il Ministry of Defence, nel doppio ruolo di partner e cliente) responsabile della consegna delle Queen Elizabeth nel rispetto di tempi e costi.
La costruzione della prima nave, la HMS Queen Elizabeth, è ben avviata in tutto il Regno Unito presso i cantieri di Appledore, Glasgow, Portsmouth Rosyth e Tyneside. Sono già stati piazzati subcontratti del valore di 1.2 miliardi di sterline (1.36 miliardi di euro) dei £ 1.5 miliardi previsti (1.7 miliardi di euro) con fornitori localizzati in quasi ogni regione del Regno Unito, contribuendo a supportare sia l’industria nazionale che i relativi posti di lavoro.
Le nuove unità, HMS Queen Elizabeth e HMS Prince of Wales, avranno un dislocamento di 65.000 tonnellate e potranno operare un mix di 40 velivoli ad ala fissa e rotante (36 F-35B Lightning II, 4 piattaforme Airborne Early Warning).
