AgustaWestland, una società Finmeccanica, ha presentato, presso l’AFA Air Warfare Symposium di Orlando, Florida, l’elicottero multiruolo AW139M, versione dell’AW139 per il mercato americano, destinata alla competizione indetta dalla US Air Force per il programma Common Vertical Lift Support, volto a sostituire l’attuale flotta datata di 62 UH-1N.
Prodotto nell’impianto AgustaWestland North America di Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, l’AW139M incorpora avionica e sistemi di produzione americana come il FLIR ad alta definizione, dispositivi di autoprotezione anti-missile elettro-ottici e infrarosso, un carrello di atterraggio rafforzato per impieghi pesanti su terreni difficili, e sedili con protezione balistica. L’elicottero può essere personalizzato con serbatoi corazzati autosigillanti, attacchi per pod esterni dove possono travare spazio mitragliatrici, missili o lanciarazzi, due verricelli per missioni SAR, due mitagliatrici da 7.62mm o fucili di precisione da 12.7mm montati sui due portelloni o una mitragliatrice da 12.7mm montata sul pavimento della cabina
L’AW139M CVLSP ha una ridotta firma termica e acustica ed è dotato di un sistema completo di protezione anti-ghiaccio, che ne permette il funzionamento in sicurezza nelle basi missilistiche della US Air Force situate più a nord.
Il volume interno è del 30% superiore a quello della piattaforma che deve sostituire, con un aumento del 50% per quanto riguarda la capacità di carico.
L’elicottero è spinto da due PT6C-67C FADEC di Pratt & Whitney. La velocità di crociera è di 165 nodi con un’autonomia di 1241 km (poco più di 5 ore). Quota di tangenza pratica di 20.000 piedi e carico utile di 3 tonnellate.
L’annuncio del vincitore della gara è atteso per il 2012 con consegne del primo lotto di produzione (almeno 16 velivoli) da completarsi entro il 2017, e capacità operativa iniziale da raggiungere nel 2015.
Circa 350 AW139 sono operativi oggi, utilizzati in diversi ruoli da 135 clienti in 50 paesi, per impieghi governativi, di homeland security e militari.
