Marinette Marine, società Fincantieri, e Lockheed Martin, a guida del team industriale, hanno avviato la costruzione della LCS 5, la USS Milwaukee, da consegnare alla US Navy nel 2014.
Il team ha recentemente avuto il via libera per la produzione completa della LCS 5 dopo aver ricevuto l’approvazione ufficiale della Marina Militare statunitense che ha esaminato la rispondenza dei costruttori a criteri di efficienza e prontezza produttiva e progettuale.
La LCS 5 è la prima unità del lotto di 10 navi la cui costruzione è stata assegnata a Lockheed Martin nel dicembre 2010. Altre 10 navi nella variante trimarano, classe Independence, vengono costruite dal consorzio guidato da Austal. LM e Austal hanno già fermi gli ordini anche per le LCS 7 e 8. Le navi sorelle della prima unità USS Freedom vengono costruite nei cantieri Marinette Marine di Marinette, nel Wisconsin, in collaborazione con Gibbs & Cox che fornisce supporto ingegneristico e progettuale. La base dei fornitori comprende più di 700 aziende in 43 stati americani, e il programma potrebbe generare a regime 16.000 posti di lavoro negli Stati Uniti nel 2014.

La prima nave USS Freedom ha navigato fino ad oggi per più di 55.000 miglia nautiche e ha dimostrato le sue capacità in servizio attivo nella US Navy a partire dal 2010, con porto assegnato San Diego, in California.
La LCS 3, la seconda unità costruita dalla società controllata da Fincantieri, è stata varata nel dicembre 2010. Il suo allestimento finale beneficierà dei feedback dell’equipaggio a bordo della Freedom, in modo da far pienamente aderire le capacità della nave agli effettivi requisiti operativi. Il risultato è una migliore efficienza produttiva e una maggiore economia nella scelta delle opzioni che verranno incorporate in seguito sulle nuove navi. La USS Fort Worth verrà consegnata alla Marina nel 2012.
