Primo lancio navale del missile Exocet Block 3

L’Exocet MM40 Block 3, missile subsonico superficie-superficie per attacchi antinave e costieri ordinato dalla Marina Francese, dagli Emirati Arabi Uniti, dall’Oman e dal Marocco, è stato lanciato per la prima volta da una nave della Marina, precisamente dal cacciatorpediniere da difesa aerea Chevalier Paul, classe Forbin, seconda nave francese del programma Orizzonte. La prova è avvenuta nell’area di collaudo della Direzione Generale degli Armamenti francese presso L’ile du Levant.
Il missile, caratterizzato da bassa RCS e ridotta traccia IR, alta manovrabilità, e precisione garantita dalla suite di sensori INS/GPS, radar-altimetro FMCW, seeker attivo in banda J, è compatibile con le celle di lancio correntemente adoperate per gli Exocet MM40 Block 1 e 2, consentendo un rapido ed economico dislocamento sugli assetti della Marine Nationale, in numero massimo di 8 missili per unità. Ha un raggio d’azione di oltre 180 km (di 2/3 superiore ai Block 2), dimensioni uguali a quelle del predecessore ma con un peso inferiore, e nuovo sistema di propulsione turbofan che permette al missile di manovrare a velocità di Mach 0.9.
Il programma di aggiornamento dei 45 missili Exocet MM40 block 2 allo standard Block 3 è stato affidato nel dicembre 2008 dalla DGA a MBDA, che li consegnerà a partire da dicembre 2010 fino a giugno 2013.
Oltre alle due Orizzonte, il Block 3 equipaggerà le fregate francesi FREMM e Lafayette.
