Il Ministro della Difesa inglese Des Browne (foto) ha dichiarato che è pronto a dare il via libera alla firma del contratto relativo alle due nuove portaerei da 65.000 tonnellate di dislocamento classe Queen Elizabeth, programma del valore di circa 6.2 miliardi di euro. Ora si aspetta la formazione del consorzio industriale BVT, composto da BAE Systems (55%) e VT Group (45%), che sarà l’asse portante della Aircraft Carrier Alliance, il raggruppamento di aziende coinvolte nella realizzazione dell’opera, che verrà condotta presso i cantieri di Portsmouth, Barrow-in-Furness, Glasgow e Rosyth.
Il ministro ha commentato “Le due portaerei forniranno alle nostre forze di prima linea le moderne capacità di cui avranno bisogno nel corso dei prossimi decenni. Esse sosterranno il mantenimento della pace e la prevenzione dei conflitti così come le nostre priorità strategiche operative. Questo è un giorno importante per il progetto e sono lieto che ci stiamo avvicinando alla firma dei contratti per la loro fabbricazione”.
La Baronessa Taylor, a capo del DE&S (Defence Equipment and Support) del Ministero della Difesa, ha aggiunto:
“La conferma odierna che stiamo procedendo con le due nuove portaerei sottolinea il nostro impegno sia verso la Royal Navy che verso l’industria cantieristica nazionale. Investiremo circa £ 14 miliardi (17.6 miliardi di euro) nella Marina e nell’industria navale nel corso dei prossimi dieci – quindici anni. Le future portaerei forniranno una importante capacità militare e sosterranno molti posti di lavoro, circa 10.000 durante il picco di produzione”.
L’Ammiraglio Sir Jonathon Band, Primo Lord del Mare e Capo di Stato Maggiore della Marina: “Sono ovviamente soddisfatto della notizia di oggi che, quando la joint venture sarà costituita, consentirà al Ministero della Difesa e all’industria di firmare il contratto per le due nuove portaerei. Queste navi con i loro aerei trasformeranno le capacità di difesa del Regno Unito quando entraranno in funzione, fornendo potere aereo a sostegno di tutta la gamma di future operazioni in mare, in aria e a terra”.
Le due nuove navi, la HMS Queen Elizabeth e la HMS Prince of Wales, le più grandi mai costruite in UK, entreranno in servizio rispettivamente nel 2014 e nel 2016 e ci rimarranno per almeno 50 anni. Sostituiranno le attuali unità classe Invincible con un assetto strategico, sviluppato in collaborazione con la Francia, in grado di aumentare significativamente le capacità di proiezione delle forze nazionali.
I francesi, che vorrebbero affiancare la nuova PA2 (Porte-Avions 2) alla Charles De Gaulle (impegnata fino a novembre in lavori di ammodernamento, manutenzione e riparazione), stanno riscontrando problemi nel reperimento dei fondi (circa 2.5/3 miliardi di euro), tali da portare Nicolas Sarkozy a chiedere al Primo Ministro Gordon Brown la costituzione di un gruppo congiunto di portaerei in modo che una delle due nazioni possa “prestare” all’altra la nave in caso di necessità.
UPDATE: Realizzata l’alleanza industriale fra BAE Systems e VT Group con la creazione della joint venture BVT Surface Fleet (BVT), che combina le capacità di BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions e VT nella costruzione e supporto di navi da guerra, e le rispettive quote del 50% nella joint venture Fleet Support Limited (FSL). BVT opererà sulle strutture di Glasgow, Bristol (Filton) e Portsmouth.
BAE Systems come previsto avrà la quota di maggioranza del 55%.
