Difesa Antimissile: Nona intercettazione positiva per lo Standard Missile-3

Uno Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) lanciato dal caccia Aegis USS Decatur (DDG 73) ha intercettato con successo un missile balistico bersaglio fuori dall’atmosfera terrestre sopra l’Oceano Pacifico.
l’MRBM (Medium Range Ballistic Missile) è partito dalla Pacific Missile Range Facility di Kauai, Hawaii, alle 10.40 pm (ora della costa est) venendo scoperto e inseguito dal sistema di combattimento Aegis BMD (Ballistic Missile Defense) della USS Decatur. Quattro minuti più tardi è stato lanciato un SM-3 Block IA, che ha raggiunto la testata di rientro indipendente due minuti dopo, distruggendola nella fase di midcourse secondo principio “Hit to Kill”, ovvero senza bisogno di esplosivo ma servendosi unicamente dell’energia cinetica fornita dalla collisione diretta. E’ la terza intercettazione di un bersaglio a medio raggio, la nona per la componente sea-based Aegis del programma di difesa antimissile, la ventottesima dell’intero programma BMD.
All’evento, designato FTM-12 (Flight Test Standard Missile -12) , hanno collaborato anche l’incrociatore USS Port Royal (CG 73), presente per testare il nuovo sistema di elaborazione dei segnali del radar SPY-1B, la fregata spagnola Mendez Nunez (F-104), che ha fornito sorveglianza a lungo raggio, e un radar a terra parte del sistema THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) ha inseguito il missile scambiando informazioni con la Port Royal.
E’ la terza volta che un’unità militare non statunitense partecipa ai test di difesa antimissile; prima dell’unità spagnola, sono state coinvolte navi giapponesi e olandesi. Per la Spagna si è trattata di un’occasione di addestramento per la potenziale implementazione delle medesime capacità sulle fregate classe Alvaro de Bazán.
